Parenting Anxious Kids

Created by Dr. Eli Lebowitz and team at the Yale Child Study Center, SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is a non-traditional, evidence-based, parent treatment for children and adolescents with anxiety, OCD, and related-problems. In a nutshell, the intervention focuses on increasing parent support and reducing parent accommodation that reinforces childhood anxiety.

In SPACE, while the child is the focus, you, the parent(s)/ guardian(s), are the mechanism for change. What does this mean? You, as the caregiver can support your child in reducing their anxiety symptoms without them ever participating in treatment.

The goal of this treatment, whether in individual parent therapy or workshop format, is to give you the knowledge and tools to create change in your family, whether your child is yet eager to change or not.

Parenting Anxious Children: A Supportive Workshop

SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is an evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents with anxiety, OCD, and related-problems. Unlike other treatments, this therapy works exclusively with parents/ guardians. While the child is the focus, you, the parent, are the mechanism for change.

Who does this help?

Children and teens with anxiety (generalized anxiety, social anxiety, specific phobias), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and related disorders (ARFID, Failure to Launch).

What can you expect?

Improved knowledge and understanding about your child and the impact of anxiety, as well as practical skills to support you in supporting your family. In the workshop, you will have the opportunity to practice skills and problem solve any challenges that arise in changing family patterns.

What is included in the workshop?

Four live sessions with feedback, brief videos and at home practice, and the opportunity for further consultation to support you in implementing these therapeutic approaches at home.

What are the benefits?

SPACE removes some of the barriers that parent(s)/guardian(s) commonly face looking for services, like long wait times and low motivation from children. This supportive workshop allows for efficient learning, as well as developing community amongst participants.
